The Pennsylvania Ballet welcomes the Prodigal Son back to Philadelphia.

Adapted from a biblical story, George Balanchine's Prodigal Son is among the most celebrated works ever conceived by one of the 20th century's most prolific choreographers.

It tells the story of a rebellious boy who leaves the comfort of his father's home seeking more of what the world has to offer. Open-eyed and nave, he is soon taken advantage of by the outside world.

"He gets robbed. He gets beat up. He gets like completely destroyed and then he has to come back," says Artistic Director Angel Corella, "it's like a rollercoaster of different feelings. He goes from hope to anger to desperation; there are so many things involved in such a short time."

Corella is the ballet's new artistic director. He spent 17 years with American Ballet Theatre where he was principal dancer. Considered one of the finest dancers of his generation, he's performed for Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Sofia of Spain and three U.S. presidents.

"It's a dream come true to be able to share everything that I've learned through the years all around the world and to be able to share it with the dancers and with Pennsylvania audiences; It's a treat," he says, "I always try to get the dancers their own personalities out of the role. I don't try to make them dance like I used to, but what I say to them 'you have to be very honest.' It's not just executing steps, that you actually have to make the audience believe that what you are doing is true and if you believe, they're going to believe it."

The Prodigal Son will be at the Merriam Theater February 5th through the 8th. For tickets go to www.TheArtsinPhilly.org.
