PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Wawa Welcome America Festival continued Friday, as Philadelphia counts down to the nation's birthday.

People filled Independence Mall for a free concert by the Philly Pops on Friday night.

"Love it. I'm enjoying it - it's beautiful," said Betty Samuels.

The Philly Pops' annual holiday concert featured Broadway stars showing off their patriotic pipes and new conductor Michael Krajewski leading a bill of American favorites.

This is where it all began for the USA.

"I think it's kind of cool to think that we're here where they were to make us who we are today," said Haley Hukari.

The Stewart Family came all the way from Canada.

"We wanted to show the kids a bit of different history other than our own and what better place to come? I've always wanted to come to Philly - it's a fantastic place," said Ross Stewart.

Also part of the festival Friday - the Liberty Block Party, held around Independence Mall.

"The festivities, the entertainment, the delicious food and just the company around here it makes it very lively and fantastic," said Andrew Lee.

From jerk chicken, to mac & cheese, to spam - what would a block party be without food representing our city's diverse scene?

With a mix of new and old traditions, our city's celebrations continue to grow. Philadelphia is showing America how it's done.

"It's always a big thing here in Philadelphia because this is where it all started. We have to do it big for the 4th of July," said Tihira Gainey.

The holiday weekend fun continues with Saturday's Wawa Welcome America Philly 4th of July Jam on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, featuring our hometown band The Roots, along with Jennifer Nettles, Miguel, and some other surprise guests.

After the show, don't miss the grand finale fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
