MIDDLETOWN -- A woman in Connecticut is facing charges after she was caught on camera stealing a statue from a teenager's gravesite.

The family of 19-year-old Brandon Reeve had surveillance cameras installed at his grave in Middletown after items began disappearing a few years ago.

Those cameras captured the woman in the act.

Seeing the video was a sight that dad James Reeve has played over and over again, thinking "how could you?"

"I don't know why anyone would want to do this to us," he said.

Shortly after the video circulated, the woman turned herself in to police. They say she likely didn't expect cameras near a gravesite.

"She was very surprised, from what I understand, and very remorseful," Middletown Police Captain Gary Wallace said.

She reportedly told police she took the statue because she was thinking about her own ill relatives.

"I'm hoping that people just leave people alone in the cemetery," James Reeve said. "Just leave them alone. They're gone."

Next month marks the 10th anniversary of Brandon's passing, from a motorcycle accident, and his father said there is not a day that goes by that he doesn't think about his son. Now, he's just hoping Brandon can be in peace.

"This is Brandon's resting place," he said. "Let him rest."
