Not at shore? Enjoy local Memorial Day festivities

PENN'S LANDING (WPVI) -- While many head to the shore for Memorial Day Weekend, there's also a lot going on in the city and its suburbs.

From horse shows to kids' activities and ceremonies honoring the true meaning of the holiday, there are plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the unofficial kick off to summer.

If strapping on a pair of roller skates along the banks of the Delaware River sounds like an intriguing idea, then the Blue Cross RiverRink is for you.

The iconic winter time venue south of the Ben Franklin Bridge is rolling out Summer Fest on Friday.

To skate it costs $3. To rent some wheels, $10.

While many head to the shore for Memorial Day Weekend, there's also a lot going on in the city and its suburbs.

New to Summer Fest this year is Chickie and Pete's Waterfront Crabshack, with everything from hard-shell crabs to crab fries.

Say it's horses you want to see? Then it's Devon you want.

The Devon Horse Show & Country Fair, the largest and oldest multi-breed outdoor horse show, is going at full gallop from now until June 5.

But if Iron Horses, at least small ones trundling through a beautiful sylvan setting, are more to your liking, then Morris Aboretum will be where you want to be this weekend.

Summer Garden Railway 2016 kicks off on Saturday.

This year's theme we are told is Awaken the Senses.

According to the Arboretum's website, you can listen to the swoosh of the trains as they whiz by on the outdoor, 1/4 mile long track or imagine the scent of baking wafting from Randy's Donut Shop and Ye Old Cakery Bakery.

We're not sure what that means, but it sounds interesting.
