When should children, teens and tweens be allowed to wear makeup?

It's a common question for parents of tweens, teens, and even younger children: when can I wear makeup?

It's natural that as kids grow up, they want to look more adult.

Pediatricians say there's no perfect age - but there are some factors to keep in mind.

"It depends on culture, family, several of my patients that participate in activities like dance or performance art, they will be introduced to make-up much earlier than those who are not involved in those types of activities," said Dr. JoAnn Robinson.

Dr.Robinson says less is more, regardless of age.

So start with something light, like lip gloss.

She also says to steer clear of scented, or oil-based products because they can cause irritation, particularly for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Finally, the fewer ingredients on the label, the better.
