A New Mexico man was left battered and bruised after allegedly trying to carjack a group of football players.

According to Albuquerque ABC affiliate KOAT-TV, Angelo Martinez asked the group of football players for a ride home from a local community center but kept changing his mind about where he wanted to go.

When Martinez eventually directed them to a home in southeast Albuquerque, the football players said Martinez pulled out a gun and told them to get out of the car.

The players told KOAT-TV Martinez fumbled his weapon, and one of the victims began to punch him in the face before his colleagues also began assaulting Martinez.

Officers were called to the scene, and Martinez was taken into custody. It was later determined that Martinez's gun was fake.
