Abington Hospital scholarships two strong toddlers
ABINGTON, Pa. (WPVI) -- There's big hope for the future of some of the teeniest babies born at Abington Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
On Tuesday, the hospital presented two pretty amazing toddlers with scholarships.
They are two little guys who overcame some of the biggest hurdles.
One of them, Daniel Krupp, is almost two years old.
He was born at 27 weeks gestation at 2 pounds, 13 ounces.
He overcame incredible odds from premature lungs, immature breathing patterns, a heart defect and feeding difficulties.
His mom, Danielle, holding back tears, said he was there for 64 days and that the team has truly become family.
"I am grateful to them. They know that I lost my husband in August of last year and they have been amazing," Danielle said.
Daniel received a $5,000 scholarship toward his future college education in the name of Dr. Ara Moomjian, who ran the NICU for 34 years, bringing it from just four beds to 34 and making it a Level 3, state of the art facility.
Dr. Moomjian recently retired.
Another scholarship was also given to now 18-month-old Kymeer Hooks.
It was given in the name of local philanthropist Gerry Lenfest.
Kymeer was only given a 7% chance of survival, but is now thriving after spending 165 days there at the NCIU in Abington.
