25 N.J. residents, 3 from South Jersey, have tested positive for a mosquito-borne virus that has spread through the Caribbean.

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- 25 New Jersey residents, including 3 from South Jersey, have tested positive for a mosquito-borne virus that has spread through the Caribbean.

Two cases of the Chikungunya virus were reported in Gloucester County and one in Burlington County.

State health officials say all of those infected had recently traveled to the Caribbean.

The virus is spread by the Asian Tiger mosquito is not life-threatening, but it can be debilitating, causing fever, headaches and joint pain.

The African word Chikungunya means contorted or hunched over from pain.

Mosquito control experts are setting up mosquito traps throughout New Jersey as a preventative measure.
