Runners came from near and far to take part in the 12 annual Gary Papa Run to help fight prostate cancer

Thousands of people gathered around the Philadelphia Museum of Art Sunday for a Father's Day tradition - the 12th annual Gary Papa Run.

The run raises money for the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health.

Ever since 6abc's beloved sports director Gary Papa succumbed to prostate cancer, the 5K run and walk has been named in his honor.

Many of Gary's friends and co-workers from 6abc were on hand for the run.

"Before he passed away five years ago, this was a much smaller affair. I think when he died right before the race, everyone came out to honor him and now it just exploded. I think he'd just be honored and amazed that everyone was here on Father's Day for this cause, for this run, in his name," said Action News sports anchor Jamie Apody.

"It seems to have more and more meaning for me every year because it means that more and more men and being vigilant and getting themselves checked and perhaps having their lives saved," said Action News anchor Jim Gardner.

And while runners like Cecily Tynan and Adam Joseph garnered much attention, Gary's wife, Kathy, pointed out that everyone here who took part was a hero.

Each and every person who participated is helping to raise awareness of the need for both early detection and a cure for prostate cancer.

"If you look around, everyone here has as story that will break your heart. Everyone here wishes that they didn't have to be here. That's what's so amazing that every year they come to support men that they love, survivors and their families," said Kathy Papa.

That included Pete's Pak, a group of runners and walkers who came out to support survivor Pete Coppola.

"He survived prostate cancer I don't how many years ago. My dad worked with him so it's out of respect for Pete and his dad," said Sean Sherwin.

"Pete and my Pop-Pop had this cancer and I want to run for them because I love them," said young Amber Downs.

Gary always said he was looking for day when people could sleep in on Father's Day morning but until that day comes and there is a cure for prostate cancer, every knows that they are doing their part to help others.
