Despite all the turmoil about it, the Affordable Care Act is still in effect, and enrollment opens Wednesday.

For most people, you're required to have coverage during 2018, or you'll face a penalty.

There are navigators to help you choose a plan, but it can be complicated, so Consumer Reports has some things to keep in mind.

"With all the earlier uncertainty about the ACA's future, some insurance companies pulled out of the ACA exchanges, but every county in the U.S. will have at least one insurer offering coverage," said Consumer Reports Money Editor Donna Rosato. "But in many places, your options may be different than they were last year."

So that means even if you re-enroll in the same plan you have this year, it might not be your best option.

Your health needs might have changed, or plans might have changed their benefits.

Remember, tax credits can be used for any exchange plan. However, credit amounts might change year-to-year.

Enrollment runs until mid-December, so start your research early, and give yourself enough time to weigh all the choices.
