Doctors already knew that women who gain a lot of weight during pregnancy are more likely to have overweight children.

But, surprisingly women who gain weight after pregnancy are also more likely to have overweight children.

There are three plausible explanations for the link between a mother's weight and her child's weight, including genes, lifestyle and intra-uterine programming.
