Pediatric staff saves sick primate
Pediatric staff saves sick primate. Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on May 15, 2017.

A life-saving episode is just coming to light. Pediatricians helped save an unusual patient: a primate at a zoo.

Last November, a 3-year-old bonobo, which is like a chimp, at the Milwaukee County Zoo was very sick with pneumonia.

The ape, named Noelle, was turning blue and in need of oxygen.

The zoo called the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Staffers there wanted to help Noelle breathe, if they could connect an old ventilator to equipment at the zoo.

It wasn't long before Noelle was breathing better, and gaining strength.

The ape just recently went back into an area where the public can visit.
