Tattoos and body piercings are becoming much more common among teenagers.

So for the first time, the American Academy of Pediatrics is offering guidance.

The doctors group recognizes it's a growing trend. They're not saying they're for or against them, but there are considerations they want young people to keep in mind.

As for medical complications, such as an infection, it's rare, but you do want to make sure if you get a tattoo or piercing, that you go to a reputable and clean place that follows infection control procedures.

Also, make sure you're up to date on all your vaccinations and that you're not on any medications that can suppress your immune system.

The academy also wants teenagers to understand the permanent nature of body work. It is much more accepted, but a recent survey found some people still believe it can hurt your chances of getting a job.
