Restaurants, takeout biggest contributors to sodium intake
Restaurants, takeout biggest contributors to sodium intake. Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5 p.m. on May 8, 2017.

It's no secret Americans eat too much salt. Many people are trying to cut down, but they may be focusing on the wrong culprits.

A team at the University of Minnesota looked at eating patterns in three different sections of the country.

They found dining out and takeout food contribute more than two-thirds of the total sodium intake.

The next biggest contributor was inherently salty foods.

Salt added during cooking at home was a distant third and salt added at the table came in last.

So if your health care provider says you need to cut back on salt, try eating out less and making more food at home.
