Controlling zika: R.N. Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5:00 p.m. on July 21, 2017

Scientists in California have an interesting new plan to help cut the population of mosquitoes.

It sounds counterintuitive but they plan on releasing millions of new mosquitoes.

Those mosquitoes will be sterile males. So when they mate with females, the eggs won't hatch.

The project is called Debug Fresno, and its goal is to reduce the risk for mosquito-borne illnesses, including the Zika virus.
