Walgreens to pay $200K settlement for allegedly mishandling opiods

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Walgreens has agreed to pay $200,000 dollars for alleged mishandling of opioids and other narcotics.

It comes after an investigation by the Massachusetts Attorney General, but could affect pharmacies everywhere.

Over a five year period, multiple Walgreens in Massachusetts are said to have failed to monitor the opioid use of some medicaid patients who were considered high risk.

Some stores accepted cash for the drugs instead of going through the agency.

A Walgreens spokesperson says the prescriptions were legitimate, but in a settlement, the company will pay $200,000 dollars and update its policies.

In September, CVS faced a similar issue, paying nearly $800,000 dollars and also updating its policies.
