WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- Could you imagine getting a water bill for more than $11,000? That's what happened to Conceleta Patterson-Berbick of Wilmington.
Conceleta, already struggling financially, was shocked when she got her water bill in the mail.
Her monthly payment was $819.
"I'm a single mother with five children, three of them are sick. I cannot work and I couldn't see no way I could pay this bill," she said.
To make matters worse, Conceleta says she's been fighting this issue with the City of Wilmington for two years.
"I don't understand how would I use all this water," she said.
An inspection showed that there were no leaks on her property. Further review determined that her meter wasn't working properly.
However Conceleta says the city blamed her.
"It was my fault to let them know that the meter was not working. I told them that I am not a meter mechanic so there is no way that I could know that the meter is not working," she said.
Frustrated, she turned to the Action News TroubleShooters for help.
"To my surprise, they came out the next day," said Conceleta.
Our cameras were there as workers installed a new meter.
And as for that $11,000 bill?
"The City of Wilmington called me yesterday and they told me that my bill is dissolved," she said.
An outcome that has certainly made her very happy.
"I am so relieved. I am so happy, I am telling you I can't find words to thank Action News," said Conceleta.
