Mayfair resident trapped in Puerto Rico as Maria looms
Mayfair resident trapped in Puerto Rico as Maria looms: Christie ileto reports on Action news at 11 p.m., September 19, 2017.

Rebecca Ruiz and her husband took a trip to Puerto Rico to visit family and celebrate their wedding anniversary.

What they didn't anticipate was that Maria would strengthen to a category 5 storm, leaving them trapped on the island directly in its path.

Speaking by phone from Cabo Rojo before the storm made landfall, Ruiz said she has never endured a hurricane.

"We began putting water aside, making sure we had potable water," she said. "We put the storm shutters up and we're just waiting."

Ruiz said she is trying to have faith and remain positive because she has two daughters back home in Mayfair.

While her daughters are here in Philadelphia, Ruiz said she is glad she is with her mother-in-law in Puerto Rico, as otherwise she would have been enduring the hurricane alone.

"Now it's getting realistic for me, and we're just anticipating being inside for quite a while," said Ruiz.
