MAYFAIR (WPVI) -- A dirt bike rider is dead and another is hospitalized after a crash in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia.

Police say the dirt bike collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe.

The owner of the Tahoe, Kevin Keating, says the 19-year-old driver of the dirt bike didn't even see the collision coming because his head was turned.

"I was afraid. I couldn't see where he was. I thought he was under the truck; it was scary," Keating said.

Philadelphia police say it was around 1:30 p.m. Monday when residents in the Mayfair community say the dirt bike driver was on the sidewalk and in the roadway.

They saw a 19-year-old woman was on the back of the bike riding the pegs.

Keating says he was approaching Cottman Avenue on the 7200 block of Hawthorne Street when the pair slammed right into the front of his Tahoe.

"I didn't see them until the last minute and I don't know if I closed my eyes when the impact happened and I slammed my brakes, I just know he wasn't looking at me, it looked like he was looking back at Cottman Ave and next thing you know, I didn't see him and she was on the ground in front of me," Keating said.

Both were rushed to Aria Health Torresdale.

The 19-year-old man died of his injuries.

The 19-year-old woman remains in serious condition.

This past Saturday night, Action News reported on another dirt bike, ATV crackdown.

The operation netted the most illegal street vehicles in one day for the city at 68.

Those who saw this crash aftermath say people need to truly realize the danger.

"The cops can't even try to chase after them because they're afraid that something like this will happen and so it's horrible, it's horrible," Kevin Twist of Mayfair said.
