VIDEO: Road crews ready for snow
Many counties have declared a code blue and opened warming centers for the night.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- The winter season arrived three weeks ago, but wintry weather has been putting off it's opening appearance.

PennDOT crews were up and down Interstate-78 Tuesday morning ahead of the snow;s arrival in the Lehigh Valley.

Like many of us, PennDOT says they are preparing for the worst while hoping for the best.

We are approaching the middle of January and the road salt stockpiles remain all but untouched so far in our region.

So, PennDOT is ready.

Jeff Chirico reports on the first flakes of the season.

And when the snow does begin to fly, PennDOT has something new for you to check out. They've added a component to 511PA.com that allows you to track hundreds of plow trucks as they're doing their jobs in real time.

There are also streaming traffic alerts for motorists driving across a region where heavy snow or inclement weather is approaching.

It is a helpful tool to navigate through winter.

Action News says take it slow and maintain safe driving distances to keep safe on the roads.
