We know there are a lot of excuses and real obstacles that can get in the way when you're trying to improve your health.

A new survey from the Mayo Clinic shows work is one of the greatest barriers.

Work schedule was voted as the "number one obstacle" in a poll of more than 1,000 adults called the State of the Nation's Health.

The average American now works almost 47 hours a week.

This was especially true for people living in the Northeast and those who make more than $100,000 a year.

Other barriers included the cost of healthy food, taking care of loved ones and getting too little sleep.

The survey also looked at scheduling medical appointments for prevention, such as for a screening like a colonoscopy.

It found women were twice as likely to follow through on medical matters, but experts say men need to make this a priority as well.

As for busy work schedules, try to plan exercise into your day at least three times a week.

And there is strength in numbers, so encourage others to join you eating healthy.
