FAIRMOUNT PARK (WPVI) -- Two children are hospitalized after a vehicle they were passengers in collided with an unmarked police cruiser in the city's Fairmount Park section.

It happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday along Belmont Avenue near Montgomery Avenue.

Police said the unmarked police cruiser, driven by a police commander, was traveling westbound on Montgomery Avenue when it was struck on the passenger's side as it entered the intersection.

The striking vehicle, driven by a 28-year-old woman, was traveling southbound along Belmont Avenue. A 9-year-old girl was in the passenger's seat and a 2-year-old boy was in the back seat of the vehicle.

Police said initial findings are the woman may have been distracted by the kids and ran a red light, striking the cruiser.

The 9-year-old was rushed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for injuries to the face and teeth.

The 2-year-old, whom police said was not in a car seat, was also taken to CHOP to be treated for cuts and bruises.

The woman was unharmed in the crash.

The police commander suffered a minor injury to his left leg.

So far, no charges have been filed.

Police are investigating.
