A man is in critical condition after being beaten in West Philadelphia.

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A man is in critical condition after being beaten in West Philadelphia.

Police were called out to the area of 62nd and Market streets around 2:08 a.m. Sunday for the report of a shooting.

Arriving officers discovered a male in his 20s unconscious, lying face down bleeding from his face and head in the intersection of 62nd and Arch streets.

The victim did not appear to be suffering from gunshot wounds, police say.

Officers rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition. Upon arrival, he was taken to the operating room.

While taking the victim to the hospital, officers were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 57th and Market streets.

There were no injuries reported in the accident.

Witnesses tell police the beating victim was assaulted by 5-6 unknown males who kicked and stomped him after chasing him from the area of 62nd and Market.

Police have not made any arrests in connection with the beating.

The scene was held as police investigated.
