TRENTON, N.J. -- New Jersey State police are mourning the loss of a family member.

Their beloved horse, Sprout has died.

Since 2000, he worked with the department mostly at class graduations, picnics and community events.

In times of loss, Sprout could be seen in the cemetery as the rider-less horse, honoring a fallen trooper.

Sprout was 22-years-old and had been cared for by Lieutenant Ted Schaffer.
