Woman admits lying to obtain Superstorm Sandy relief funds

CAMDEN, N.J. -- A New Jersey woman has admitted fraudulently receiving more than $20,000 in federal relief funds related to Superstorm Sandy.

Federal prosecutors say Andrea Knoerzer pleaded guilty Wednesday to disaster benefits fraud. The 53-year-old Voorhees woman faces up to 30 years in prison. Sentencing is June 23.

Knoerzer had claimed in her application that a home she owned in Ocean City was her primary residence. She said the October 2012 storm left the home uninhabitable and damaged her station wagon.

But prosecutors say Knoerzer's primary residence was in Voorhees and her vehicle wasn't in Ocean City when the storm hit.

After she received temporary rental assistance, she submitted false documents to ensure she would get more aid.

Officials say Knoerzer got $13,373 in emergency rental assistance and $7,500 for transportation assistance.
