A police chase almost ended in a tragedy for an officer in South Philadelphia.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A police chase almost ended in a tragedy for an officer in Philadelphia.

The incident started in the 12th district in Southwest Philadelphia with police on routine patrol.

The officers discovered a van that fit a description regarding a burglary.

As one of the officers approached the van it veered toward him, but he got out of the way in time, and was not hurt.

He called in a description of the van to alert other officers.

The suspects then drove across the Passyunk Avenue Bridge to South Philadelphia.

Police stopped the van on the 2200 block of South Carlisle Street where the driver and a passenger bailed from the vehicle.

A foot pursuit then occurred, but the suspects were last seen on Wolf Street.

Police are holding the vehicle as the investigation continues.

The two suspects remain at large.
