Two plain clothes Philadelphia police officers just happened to be passing by.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A rollover crash on the Schuylkill Expressway left two men with serious injuries.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the westbound lanes of the I76 between University Avenue and South Street.

According to police, the driver lost control causing the vehicle to roll over. One of the men was ejected in the rollover and the other became trapped in the wreckage.

Two plain clothes Philadelphia police officers just happened to be passing by. They stopped to help the victims and started to put out an engine fire.

State police and firefighters soon arrived and closed down the highway for about an hour.

Both victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital with numerous injuries.

The expressway has since reopened.
