ATLANTIC CITY -- Atlantic City took steps Wednesday night to avert the threatened shutdown on Friday.

City Council unanimously approved a measure that changes payroll for city workers from a two-week cycle to every four weeks.

They're hoping that will buy them some time, and should delay a shutdown of nonessential services for about two months.

But it's not a long-term solution, and today Gov. Chris Christie came to the seaside resort town to blast Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian as a "liar" who has "zero idea what he's talking about."

Guardian says he no longer supports a state takeover because he doesn't believe the bill protects the city workers.
