There are several simple things you can do to improve your overall health.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- We constantly hear new information on how to improve our health, and it may seem overwhelming.

But researchers say there are some simple things you can do to be healthier.

You can do them everyday, and scientists say they will keep health problems at bay.

They are activities that are not only fun, but beneficial, too.

When it comes to volunteering, you get more than a good feeling from helping others.

According to an American Journal of Public Health study, people who volunteer are better protected against stress.

Researchers found those who don't give back as much had 30 percent higher risk of dying after a stressful life event.

In addition to volunteering, cooking can also be a simple health booster.

Studies show home cooked meals are generally healthier than ones from a restaurant.

And according to a 2014 study in the Journal of Public Health Nutrition, people who regularly eat at home consume about 130 fewer calories than those who don't.

The last suggestion is the most fun - play with a pet!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, caring for an animal has been shown to decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and to take away feelings of loneliness.

And if you're out walking your pet everyday, they keeps you moving, which can help lower your blood pressure among many other benefits.
