CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- The city of Philadelphia announced plans thursday to stick out its green thumb.

City Council members joined Pennsylvania's Secretary of Agriculture to stake a claim in the burgeoning vertical farming industry.

The increasingly popular method is used to grow fresh, pesticide free produce INSIDE, year-round, in urban settings.

Experts said that Philadelphia is well positioned to become a global hub for production and training.
