CRANSTON HEIGHTS, Del. (WPVI) -- The mother of a group of ducklings was killed trying to help her babies trapped in a sewer in Delaware.

Firefighters were called around 8:30 a.m. Saturday when the mother duck was seen frantically pacing over a sewer gate along Centerville Road and Old Capitol Trail in Cranston Heights.

When the fire crews arrived, officials say the mother had sadly been hit by a car and killed.

Officials managed to rescue the eight ducklings that were trapped in the sewer.

The ducklings were taken to the Tri-State Bird Sanctuary in Newark.
