A 34-year-old man was injured after an explosive device detonated in a backpack in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood.

KENSINGTON (WPVI) -- A 34-year-old man was injured after an explosive device detonated in a backpack in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood.

Police were called around 1:15 a.m. Saturday to a report of a man injured in a fireworks accident.

The victim, who police say has a history of mental illness, was carrying the explosive device. His hand was severely injured.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The bomb squad responded to the scene.

People were told to shelter in place during the investigation.

Police say no one was in any danger.
