A California teenager is on a historic flight, hoping to break a world record.

Sixteen-year-old Isaiah Cooper took off from Compton Tuesday morning.

He is on a quest to become the youngest African-American pilot to fly around the continental United States.

Cooper learned to fly through an inner-city aeronautical program.

He says the trip is about motivating other young people.

"I'm trying to teach them at a young age that if they put guns down, and they make better decisions they can all do something like this," said Cooper.

Cooper is already thinking of his next mission - to become the youngest person to fly solo around the world.
