Last call extended during Democratic National Convention

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Last call in Philadelphia just got a little later.

That is for establishments hosting events related to the Democratic National Convention coming to town in two weeks.

"We're booked solid from Sunday through Thursday night," said Brad Histand, General Manager of La Peg.

La Peg in Old City is one of many restaurant-bars hosting DNC parities.

"It gives us an opportunity to make more money, more taxes for the city, more money for the restaurants," said Histand. "I think our staff will be happy to stay later."

The standard last call in the city is 2 a.m.

But late Wednesday night, the state legislature decided to let the Liquor Control Board approve special event permits to bars, hotels and restaurants for that week.

"Everyone wants to stay out as long as they can," said Sam Simon of Old City.

For Natalie Murillo, the decision is music to her ears.

"Having it open a little bit later is great as well. It lets us enjoy the party of the DNC, and the good feelings we have about hosting it in our town," said Murillo of West Philadelphia.

When Philadelphia hosted the Republican National Convention in 2000, a similar waiver was put in place.

This year's event will draw 50,000 delegates and attendees.

"I think it's a great idea to bring people in cause there's going to be so many people here, and after hours people are going to be looking for things to do," said Jennifer Wong of West Philadelphia. "So it's a great opportunity to socialize and meet with other people from around the country."
