Man questioned after bicyclist killed in Frankford hit-and-run

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia Police are questioning a person of interest after a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on Friday morning in the Frankford section.

Surveillance video obtained by Action News from a nearby apartment shows the victim, 42-year-old Matthew Matteson, riding his bicycle in the 5700 block of Frankford Avenue.

A Buick travelling in the opposite direction swerves and hits Matteson head-on. His body was thrown about 100 feet from the hood of the car.

The Buick stops and at least one person appears to get out of the car as other people respond.

Then, the Buick speeds off.

Later Friday morning police recovered the heavily damaged Buick on the 1800 block of Van Kirk after a man came forward.

"This person approached two SEPTA officers on the 5300 block of Bustleton and said he was in an accident last night. He then shows the officers where the car was located," said Capt. Patrick Kelly.

Police have been questioning the man all day. They are trying to figure out if he was the person behind the wheel.

His family tell Action News Matteson rode his bike everywhere, and had been the victim of a hit-and-run a few years back in Center City.

Neighbors described him as a gentleman.

"Oh my God, I don't know what to say. It's just a shock," said Brenda Coffin.

Police say charges in this case may not come for several weeks.
