Shots were fired during an altercation between Abington police and an armed, suicidal suspect in Glenside.

It happened around 11:55 p.m. Sunday on the 2700 block of Limekiln Pike.

Police say officers stopped a man that matched the description of a suicidal person from Upper Dublin Township.

While speaking with the man, police say he took a revolver out of his jacket pocket.

Shots were fired during a scuffle between an Abington Township police and a suspect in Glenside.



Officers immediately grabbed the gun and attempted to disarm him. The suspect resisted and began to fight with the officers.

During the struggle, the gun discharged. No one was hit.

The man was subdued and taken into custody. He is being held for a mental health evaluation.

Charges are pending.

The responding officers are being praised for disarming a dangerous situation.

"There is no greater joy than saving a life, here you have somebody who's desperate, wanting to take his own life, and the officers put themselves at risk to save someone who is very desperate," said Lt. Patrick Molloy of Abington Police

Police suffered minor injuries unrelated to the gun shots.
