Cecily Tyan visits the gorillas at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Action News meteorologist Cecily Tynan stopped to say hello to a baby gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo.

The baby gorilla's 21-year-old mother, Honi, had been holding it so closely after its birth Aug. 26 that zookeepers couldn't confirm if it was male or female. The baby was confirmed to be a girl on Tuesday.

The zoo is encouraging the public to help name the baby western lowland gorilla. It's partnering with a sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo that rehabilitates Grauer's gorillas whose families have been killed by poachers.

Voters can go online to donate a dollar and choose from a list of names that honor orphaned gorillas. The money benefits the sanctuary.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered.
