The Tony-award winning musical An American in Paris is coming to Broadway Philadelphia.

The musical is based on the Academy Award-winning film by the same name.

The original 1951movie starred Gene Kelly as an American soldier and Leslie Caron, a mysterious French girl, dancing through the streets of Paris in the aftermath of World War II to the music of George and Ira Gershwin.

"It's the story of their romance around the streets and sights and sound of Paris," explains Frances Egler, The Kimmel Center's Director of Programming, "But this is totally recreated in a brand new dance and theatre celebration for the stage."

The musical made its Broadway debut in April 2015 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It won 4, including one for Best Choreography.

"This is the first time that the story has appeared live on stage combining the dance and the very well-known Gershwin score," says Egler.

The musical features jazz standards like I Got Rhythm, S'Wonderful and They Can't Take That Away From Me.

"Those are all songs that I think the fans, especially of Broadway, would know once they hear them," Egler says, "It's the classics of the 20s and 30s, George and Ira Gershwin, some of the amazing American songbook songs."

Pennsylvania Ballet choreographer Christopher Wheeldon choreographed and directed the show, his first foray into musical theater.

"It's just this amazing number with tap dancing, with show girls; it's quite a spectacle. It's really one of the great highlights of the show," says Egler, "if you love great songs, if you love amazing dance, and if you love romance, it's really the perfect combination of a Broadway show."

An American in Paris plays at the Academy of Music November 22- -27th.
