A woman and young child are critical after they were stabbed in Philadelphia's Mantua section.

MANTUA -- A woman and young child are critical after they were stabbed in Philadelphia's Mantua section.

It happened around 7:40 p.m. Monday along the 700 block of North Preston Street.

Police say a 2-year-old boy was stabbed in the head, and his mother, a 43-year-old woman was stabbed in the left shoulder.

The mother was found on the highway and the child was found on the second floor hallway inside the home.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the mother was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Both victims are in critical condition.

The woman was able to tell police that the man who stabbed her was on the porch.

Investigators were able to arrest the mother's 26-year-old boyfriend and recover a weapon.

Police say the suspect was high on narcotics at the time of the incident.

The suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and other related offenses.
