A 44-year-old man died in an intense blaze in West Philadelphia.

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 44-year-old man died in an intense blaze in West Philadelphia.

The fire started around 8:30 p.m. Thursday on the 300 block of North 64th Street.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the second floor of a three-story storefront.

The fire was brought under control at 9:15 p.m.

Officials say they found a 44-year-old man dead inside.

Two businesses have been damaged, and eight people have been displaced, in addition to the fatality.

"Certainly while our firefighters and our medics always do the best they can, this is a very frustrating and unfortunate result for us," said Philadelphia Fire Department Commission Adam Thiel. "Despite their best efforts, heroic efforts in fact, they weren't able to get to this particular individual."

There is no word on what may have sparked the blaze.

The victim has not been identified at this time.
