PERKASIE, Pa. (WPVI) -- A local veterinary team is just wrapping up a free clinic for dogs and cats living on an island off the coast of Nicaraguan.

In this week's Shelter Me, meet a Perkasie rescue on a mission to save dogs here and around the world.

Inside Bucks County's Pennridge Animal Hospital, they're not just giving medical care.

Beth Mehaffey is DVM/Owner of Penn Ridge Animal Hospital and President of Harley's Haven Rescue.

They're helping dogs find homes through Harley's Haven.

"We just hit like 500 dogs saved. We're actually a little over 500 dogs in a little over 5 years, which is awesome," said Dr. Beth.

Harley's Haven is named for the first dog Dr. Beth ever rescued as a freshman in college.

"He's kind of been the inspiration for a lot of my life. He's the rescue, even the trip to Nicaragua.

This is the second year Dr. Beth and her team are holding a free veterinary clinic on Nicaragua's Big Corn Island.

Dr. Beth said, "They have no veterinary care at all. There's about 5000 people on the island and they pretty much all have pets."

In just 4 days, they spay, neuter and vaccinate hundreds of animals.

"I feel like I can help, so I think I should," said Dr. Beth.

And there are lots of dogs who need help.

And finally, meet Sullivan. He's only 6-months-old so he still has some growing to do, but he's almost fully house trained already. He gets along great with other dogs and kids and is just a happy, playful guy who's eager to please.

If you're interested in Sullivan or any of the dogs you see in the video, you can visit the Pennridge Animal Hospital website.
