Honoring the ultimate sacrifice
A new memorial is now in place for an Upper Darby police officer, killed in the line of duty

DREXEL HILL, Pa. (WPVI) -- A new memorial is now in place for an Upper Darby police officer, killed in the line of duty.

A section of Lansdowne Avenue in Drexel Hill has been renamed for fallen officer Dennis McNamara.

He was shot and killed in 2002 while investigating a suspicious vehicle.

Monday his family accepted a replica of the new street sign.

Dozens of law enforcement officers were there on hand to take part in the tribute.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said it was an great day.

"It's a day of celebration even though Dennis McNamara was shot and killed in the line of duty 15 years ago, it's in his honor that we get together today and we name portions of the highway in his name"

The section of Lansdowne Avenue named after officer McNamara runs from School Lane to State Road.
