Hero in need of a hero

DUARTE, California -- An everyday hero is in need of his own hero.

Los Angeles County sheriff Jorge Chavez has an aggressive form of leukemia, and is in need of a bone marrow transplant.

However, there's no match in his family or on the national Bone Marrow registry.

So he's hoping someone in the public - a total stranger - can help.

"I know I wouldn't hestitate to put myself in harm's way or save their life.. And now it's ironic.. I need a stranger to save my life," said Sgt. Chavez, his voice wavering.

Doctors say Chavez's best chance is with a Hispanic donor, but only a fraction of the 20 million registered donors worldwide are African American, Asian, and Hispanic.

Chavez is also appealing through a special Facebook page, hoping to reach more potential donors.
