White House issues list of 78 attacks, Philadelphia ambush included, after Trump's statements on media coverage

President Donald Trump on Monday accused the media of deliberately minimizing coverage of threat posed by ISIS, saying news outlets "have their reasons" for not reporting what he described as a "genocide" underway at the hands of group.

The president did not immediately offer evidence to support his claim, made during the new commander in chief's first visit to the headquarters for U.S. Central Command.

Later, the White House released a list of 78 attacks it described as "executed or inspired by" ISIS since September 2014. The White House said "most" on the list did not get sufficient media attention, although it did not explain how it defined the term. Some of the incidents on the list received widespread attention and deep reporting, including a shooting that wounded a Philadelphia police officer.

"You've seen what happened in Paris and Nice. All over Europe it's happening. It's gotten to a point where it's not even being reported," Trump told a group of military leaders and troops during the visit. "And in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn't want to report it. They have their reasons and you understand that."

Trump, who has made relentless criticism of the media a hallmark of his presidency, did not explain why he thinks news outlets minimize attention on such attacks.

Later, White House spokesman Sean Spicer tried to tone down the president's remarks, saying it was a question of balance: "Like a protest gets blown out of the water, and yet an attack or a foiled attack doesn't necessarily get the same coverage."

The list released late Monday included incidents like a truck massacre in Nice, France, that killed dozens and received widespread attention, as well as less high-profile incidents in which nobody was killed.

Also included in the list released was the ambush attack on Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett in January 2016.

It is described as followed:

"PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA
January, 2016
TARGET: One police officer wounded in shooting
ATTAKER [sic]: US person"

A Philadelphia police officer ambushed by a silent gunman who later said he acted in the name of Islam testified in court Thursday about the attack.

Officer Hartnett's left arm was shattered by gunfire as he used it to cover his head in his patrol car the night of January 7th at 60th and Spruce Streets in West Philadelphia.

Hartnett said he later kicked the door open to pursue the suspect, shooting him three times, before he went to the trunk of his cruiser to look for a tourniquet. Help soon arrived, and two other officers apprehended the shooter a block away.
Hartnett, 33 at the time, spent two weeks in the hospital after the attack.

The suspect, Edward Archer of Yeadon, pledged his allegiance to ISIS, officials said.

A week after the attack, FBI Director James Comey said the agency found no indication that Archer was part of an organized terror cell.

Archer's mother told Action News her son went off the deep end after starting to hear voices.

Video of the attack on Officer Hartnett drew global attention triggering hundreds of well-wishing greetings via cards and telegrams.

"You saw all those cartons come out full of nothing but letters and cards from people young and old, from East Coast to West Coast to Great Britain," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said last January.

Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett was released from the hospital Friday, three weeks after he was injured in an ambush shooting in West Philadelphia.

The Associated Press could not verify that each of the incidents had connections to ISIS. The list appeared to be hastily assembled, including several misspellings of the word "attacker."

Trump said that, "in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn't want to report it," adding, "They have their reasons."
