Police say a welfare check turned into a police chase followed by a crash in Allentown.

Authorities received a call for a welfare check shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday along south Woodward and Priscilla streets.

Once there, an officer found a man passed out in the driver's seat of a BMW.

Police say the officer approached the car and knocked on the window, waking up the man.

They say as soon as the man saw the officer, he drove off.

The officer got back into his vehicle and searched the area for the man.

Police say the officer came upon an accident involving the BMW and an SUV along Fillmore and Pricilla streets.

The suspect then got out of the car and ran away.

It appears the suspect was on the run because he had several outstanding warrants, including DUI.

He was apprehended a short time later.

A woman in the SUV was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She has been upgraded to serious condition and is expected to survive.

No officers were injured in this incident.
