Plans unveiled for Ben Franklin Parkway's 100th birthday
CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is turning 100, and Philadelphia will mark the milestone with more than a year of activities.
The "Parkway 100" logo was revealed on Wednesday.
The Parkway Council also announced that, beginning on September 8 and continuing through November 16, 2018, there will be centennial events, exhibitions, community conversations and promotions.
6abc is a proud sponsor of the Parkway Centennial. Station president and General Manager Bernie Prazenica spoke at the event.
"The parkway, for Channel 6, has been the site of some of our biggest events over the years. Every year we're down here for the Thanksgiving Day Parade," he said. "It's the place that the city comes to celebrate."
There will be a series exhibitions varying in scope and size, including a look at the parkway's history at the Free Library.
The centerpiece exhibition will be a four month public art installation, by artist Jennifer Steinkamp, featuring five architectural domes covered with glass beading spaced across the Parkway.
"There will be four projectors very bright projecting onto domes so they will be illuminated 360," said Steinkamp.
The Parkway Council also announced a major grant from the William Penn Foundation to support a Parkway-wide public art installation this winter.
