'Tactile Carnival' raises awareness, appreciation for special needs students in NE Philadelphia

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A day of fun finally arrived Wednesday for a group of students who waited patiently for weeks in Northeast Philadelphia.

Nazareth Academy High School partnered with Saint Lucy Day School for Children with Visual Impairments and Archbishop Ryan Academy for the Deaf to create the Tactile Carnival.

A former Nazareth teacher used her skills and students to build special carnival games and activities to encourage those with special needs to improve their other senses.

The organizers also made sure it was a lot of fun.

"They are part of our community, and they are the same as us," creator Nikki Coval told Action News. "All these kids are doing everything we would be able to do. I think people just need to open their eyes and see them more."

Volunteers and students said the event is a great way to learn how to appreciate differences in others.
