Folic acid recommended before getting pregnant

PHILADELPHIA -- Whether you're planning to start a family now or later, it's a smart idea for women to take folic acid.

The U-S Preventative Services Task recently reinforced the recommendation saying it can help prevent neural tube defects if taken before a woman becomes pregnant.

They say it might be too late, if you wait until after you've conceived.

Healthy women of reproductive age should be taking at least 400 to 800 micograms daily.
