6abc Loves the arts: Introducing the American Revolution Museum

Philadelphia is now home to a brand new Museum that honors the city's history as the birthplace of America.

The Museum of the American Revolution is in the heart of Old City, just two blocks from Independence Hall.

The massive 118,000 square foot museum features more than 500 original artifacts, including weapons, paintings, print material, and digital interactives that span from 1760 to 1790.

"What you discover is how people from all walks of life really took part in the Revolution," says Michael Quinn, President & CEO of the museum. "The Native Americans who had been here for millennia, the European immigrants were colonists, as well as Africans, many brought here as slaves."

Visitors can revisit 18th century Boston and stand underneath a full-scale replica of the Liberty Tree.

"This is where The Sons of Liberty gathered under cloak of darkness to hide their identity to start discussing the issues they were having and their mounting dissatisfaction with British rule," explains Quinn.

Life-sized figures bring history to life. One exhibit depicts a brawl between units under General Washington's command.

"It really highlights the challenge of both creating an army at the same time you're fighting a revolution," says Quinn.

The museum's centerpiece is the actual tent George Washington used as his headquarters during the war.

"I know people will never forget seeing Washington's war tent, it has to be the rarest artifact from the Revolution," says Quinn.

There's a lot to see but Quinn says a ticket covers two days of exploration.

"This museum will make Philadelphia the richest, most engaging destination for heritage visitors from around the world."
