Holocaust Remembrance Day: Survivor shares her story to NJ synagogue
MT LAUREL, N.J. (WPVI) -- On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a synagogue in South Jersey hosted one of the few living survivors.
Adath Emanu-El in Mount Laurel hosted Terry Herskovits.
In 1944, Herskovits was in Budapest when the Nazis occupied Hungary.
A Christian man hid Herskovits for six months until she was discovered, and put on a train for Auschwitz.
Luckily, a Hungarian guard pushed her off the train.
Later, she learned the Nazis slaughtered everyone else on that train.
"I speak from the heart when I tell you I have had many tragedies in my life, but I never lost my faith," Herskovits told the congregation.
Herskovits eventually found Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved tens of thousands of Jews.
She urged everyone to continue telling her story so the Holocaust won't be repeated.
